In the early years of our Team, we adopted many sayings or themes to sustain us during the tough times. In 2012, as we were striking out with many others across our state to build the statewide F.A.S.T. Team, we, here in Charleston, were faced with a decision of how to sustain ourselves here at home after our transition from the Charleston Firefighter Support Team to the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team. Charleston had been our home for almost six years and moving on was a scary journey. I remember clearly the day we met together as a Team to decide where we were headed. One thing was for sure, we had stood together for six of the most difficult years of our lives and, together, we decided to take the “Leap of Faith” that sustains us to this day. We continue to have that embroidered on our shirts and while it is a slogan heard many times throughout our lives, it just seemed to fit. We took it from a song entitled, “The Cape” by country legend and songwriter Guy Clark. Last week Guy Clark passed away leaving a lasting legacy of music and song. Wish we had gotten an opportunity to tell him how much his song did for us, our Team, and our firefighters and families whom we serve. Thank you Sir. You will be missed but, rest assured, we will keep “jumping off the garage”.
